Embracing life’s difficult gifts
Welcome — I’m so glad you’re here.
I’m Dr. Courtney Burnett—physician, writer, and patient advocate—and I believe deeply in the power of what I call difficult gifts: those unexpected, life-altering challenges that at first feel like anything but gifts, yet have the potential to transform us in profound ways.
At 29, while studying abroad in Thailand, I began noticing subtle neurological symptoms. As a physician-in-training, I did what I had been taught to do—I paid attention, trusted my instincts, and quietly worked through the possibilities. I ultimately diagnosed myself with a rare, incurable brain tumor.
In an instant, I went from doctor to patient.
That experience changed everything. It challenged not only my health, but my identity, my sense of control, and my understanding of what it truly means to heal. Medicine gave me a foundation—but it was mindfulness, narrative, and the wisdom of Eastern philosophy that helped me learn how to live with uncertainty, fear, and ultimately, deeper meaning.
Today, I work as a hospitalist and assistant professor of medicine. Both inside and outside the hospital, I’m passionate about advancing patient-centered care, raising awareness for brain and rare cancers, and creating space for more honest, human conversations in medicine.
One of my most difficult gifts has been my diagnosis. It tried to break me—but like kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold— the fractures became part of my story, not something to hide. I didn’t choose this path, but it gave me something I never expected: a deeper sense of purpose and a clearer way of seeing what matters most.
I’m also the author of Difficult Gifts, where I share this journey more fully—through the lens of medicine, mindfulness, and resilience.
If you’ve found your way here, chances are you’ve unwrapped a difficult gift of your own.
You’re not alone.
This is a space for finding meaning in uncertainty, strength in vulnerability, and moments of hope and joy—even in the hardest seasons.
We are stronger together.
